Easy riders

Lôn Las Cefni is one of the best family cycling routes you will find anywhere. This bike route is flat for most of its 13 miles with all but a couple of miles off-road, so there’s no traffic to worry about. It passes through some of the most spectacular scenery on the island in just two hours of trouble-free pedalling.

John Evans of Llangefni was certainly impressed. He and his three children Cara (10), Harri (9) and Catrin (8) were cycling Lôn Las Cefni for the first time. “It’s a fine day and we took the opportunity of exploring,” he said. “This is a great chance for them all to cycle in safety.”

The children, meanwhile, were looking forward to ice creams, “It’s been brilliant so far,” said Cara, which, let’s face it, is not always the reaction when kids and exercise are combined.

Lôn Las Cefni starts in Newborough, passes through Newborough Forest (look out for the red squirrels) and alongside the RSPB Malltraeth Marsh wetland reserve, then veers inland on the banks of the River Cefni – especially widened for the purpose of cycling.

The final three miles or so beyond Llangefni are a bit steeper than the rest, but it’s worth it.

Lôn Las Cefni is a linear cycleway but we have four circular ones, too, all named after birds. Nico (Goldfinch), Giach (Snipe), Hebog (Falcon) and Telor (Warbler). All the routes are around 12 miles long, and all about the best way to see that particular part of Anglesey.

There are enough steady climbs and flat paths on our routes which will keep the whole family happy, there are some occasional steep ascents too, and that will keep the serious cyclist interested.
