Safety on the coastal path: tides

It may not come as a surprise to learn that the coastal path is affected by the tide. About 10% (around 20km) of the path follows the shoreline, and of this about 10km is actually on the foreshore ie between high and low water.

Of the 12 sections that the path is broken down into, all but one are affected to some extent by the rise and fall of the tide. However, only sections 2, 5 and 6 have parts that pose disruptions that need deliberate planning to avoid additional detours.

If you do happen to get caught out by the tide, don’t panic. If you reach a section and the tide is in, most locations do offer inland alternatives. If you can see the tide coming in very quickly, take the shortest route away from the incoming tide. Remember if in doubt, do not attempt it! As always in case of coastal emergencies dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
